Garden Arches plant support system

Gardening Made Simple and Productive

For 40 years I have been searching for a better way to physically support vegetable plants. I was increasingly tired of spending hours each summer tying plants to stakes, and using makeshift devices to stop branches from breaking. I was also frustrated that support systems are a cause of insect and disease problems by creating crowded foliage conditions. These problems add up to lower yields on less healthy plants.

Some years ago, I was talking to a respected local horticulturalist who asked me if I knew of a tomato support system that actually works, since she was struggling with the same issues. I told her that I really didn’t know of any, and I found that remarkable since gardeners spend a fortune on systems that make more work for people and produce inferior results. Many of these systems also end up in landfills because they don’t work and/or only last a few years.

Last year, I told her there is a support system that works and not just for vining crops. She saw our obelisks last Summer and said she will be buying some this year. The obelisk system that we developed at Canterbury Creek Gardens is called Garden Arches System, and also supports plants like peppers, eggplants, and even cutting flowers. Even better, it has evolved into an easy way to grow almost any garden veggie plant.

Some benefits of our Garden Arches System:

  • It doesn’t require an extensive knowledge of soil biology, or annual physical soil amending
  • The soil can last indefinitely.
  • It uses parts that can be repurposed for growing almost any plant in your garden.
  • It produces extraordinary results, even for beginners.
  • It is very cost effective.
  • It is made with very durable materials, like tubular steel.
  • We have been growing tomatoes in the same pot, without changing or physically amending the soil, for over 10 years with results shown below.

If you are tired of fighting muddy soils in spring, and high maintenance tasks in the summer like weeding and tying up branches to a host of items found in your garage — only to end up with pest problems and inferior yields, this system is for you.

We have almost no weeding in these containers

We do not turn our soils.

Every Spring, for over 10 years now, we just dig a hole the size of the transplant pot — and plant.

Convenience

As you can see in these pictures, if you want to grow any vining crops, this system works much better than conventional gardening. Just pour the soil into the fiber grow bag and plant — then you can continue planting for many years.

Compare this to the cost and labor of building raised beds, hauling in tons of soil, tilling in costly soil amendments, weeding all summer — and then redoing soil amending, and hours of weeding every year.

This is why we have changed our raised beds out for this system here. We just don’t have the time or people for raised beds.

Notes: All of the pictures shown below use the same basic components — just configured differently. One customer recommended the name Garden Transformers because of the ability to use the components in so many different ways.

The obelisk can be incredibly productive as you can see below. All of these methods are cheaper than making traditional 4×8 raised beds, but in addition provide support and even deer protection.

When you use our living soil, you need a lot less of it to achieve these kind of results. This means less soil moved, and no weeding.

These are not just big tomato cages.

Our system gives you great results and great yields

Durability
The next two pictures show tomato and cucumber plants growing in a pot and soil that have been undisturbed for over 10 years. The steel pipes show no sign of any wear.

One of our customers told me a couple of weeks ago that he has also been using these pots with the same soil for over 10 years now (see the cucumber pic below from his yard). This one obelisk, measuring only 32″ across at the base, produced bushels of cukes — and over a much longer harvest season — because the plant was healthier.

Terrific for Tomatoes

There is no support system that works as well as our Garden Arches for growing tomatoes.

Compact Plants?

This is supposedly a very compact plant that many people say they grow without staking

Large Fruited Tomato Plant

We picked well over 100 beefsteak type tomatoes from a single pot

This plant finished at over 12 feet wide and 8 feet tall growing in a pot that measured 28″ in diameter.

Perfect for Peppers

Our Garden Arches System makes growing productive peppers incredibly easy. The plant branches just grow through the netting, which also supports them as they become heavily laden with fruit. Once they are planted and the netting is up, almost no work is required except harvesting.

Notice how we double crop these pepper beds with lettuce. This also keeps the weeds down, humidity up, and the soil moist — just how peppers like it. We harvest the lettuce as it starts getting crowded by the peppers — giving the peppers more room to continue growing.

Think that 6 ft tall supports are more than enough for peppers?

So did we.

This pic was taken in late July — with 3 months left in the growing season. At this point we raised the supports to almost 8 ft, — easily done. The result – more peppers from the same space.

Sample Display Garden

This sample display garden provided a great harvest without weeding — and without time spent tying up plants. The pic above shows the netting — vertical over the tomato, and placed horizontal over the peppers, eggplant, and cut flowers.

For some reason, although this is in the middle of our parking lot, it has been left alone by our neighboring deer herd for 3 years, although we see them walk right past it on our cameras. If they do become a problem however, we will wrap it with deer netting.

This can be easily and inexpensively done since we can use the same supports to hold up the deer netting.

Pea Support

This 4’x4′ planter produce a bumper harvest of delicious snap peas — the equivalent of a 16′ row of peas held up by 2 hoops and some netting.

Eggplant Support

I have had eggplants grow 4′ high. Next year, we will be raising the hoops for this planting.

MultiPurpose

In this situation, we use the right side of the arches to hold the black deer netting — and the left side to hold the white netting we grow the tomatoes on.

Besides supporting plants, these structures can also be used as coldframes to extend the growing season either in Spring or in Fall.
